Sales of travel agents fell 3.9% in August

The turnover of travel agents and tour operators recorded a fall of 3.9% last August, according to provisional data releases today INE Indicators of Services Sector Activity. Falling sales in this subsector is attenuated in tourism -0.4% average so far this year.
By contrast, the turnover of other activities related to tourism in that month had an upward trend. Thus, housing services rose 8.6% in turnover compared to August 2013, while the services of food and drink sales increased 4.6%. Accumulated in the first eight months of the year period, the sector of hotels and other lodging accumulated a 5.4% rise in sales and restoration of 3%. Considering the combined results of accommodation and catering, hospitality activity improved 6.4% sales throughout the month.
Likewise, air transport improved its revenues, posting an increase of 9.7% compared to August of last year and what takes 2014 posted a 6.2% improvement. The railroad also noted a marked improvement in their income, with sales exceeding 9.6% this August compared to the same month last year. According to the INE, January to August, the improvement in its sales stood at 6.7%.

The INE statistics also reflects the evolution of employment in the various subsectors that make up tourism. Virtually all experienced year increase in August. Thus, employment in travel agencies and tour operators improved by 2.4%; in hosting services, 5.7%; in food and beverage services, 2.3%; and air transport, 0.1%. Only railway transport experienced a year drop in employment of 1.8%, kick that so far this year is moderated to -1.1%.
