Responsible tourism: limit the impact

During the excursions
Minimize erosion: do not be groped to create a new path or take a shortcut. Stay on marked trails where you can, even if they are muddy or there is space to walk along the edge.

While enjoying the view, be careful where you put your feet! The native flora can have cycles of growth very slow, especially at high altitudes or extreme latitudes. It can take years to grow back after being crushed by your muddy boots.

Take home with you if the waste can not be properly disposed of along the way. Bring a sturdy water bottle and boiled or purified drinking water rather than buying bottled water: the empty water bottles are becoming the scourge of the 21st century ...

personal Hygiene
The tent pegs are good palette: if you need along the trail, dug a deep hole at least 15 cm (30 cm best in hot areas), on the lower side of the path, preferably at least 100 meters away.

Bring a lighter and burn the toilet paper. If there is danger of fire, or the ground is too hard or rocky to dig a hole, use layers of leaves or rocks for cover. Be sure to be at least 100 meters from any watercourse.

Water, a precious commodity
If you take a bath or swim, given the sensitivity of the local population - both in terms of clothing, and the fact that you are using "their" water. Swim downstream from the collection points of the water or from the villages and avoid using soaps (especially if they contain phosphate) in the clean waters.

Copenhagen, 10 reasons to love it

A CITY IN BLOOM
"Florist" is a definition that does not do justice to Tage Andersen. And the word "genius" is the best way to describe his art! Begins the discovery here: tage-andersen.com.

A BEAUTIFUL BEACH
Hard to find Copenhagen in the top ten of your beach destinations, yet less than five miles south of downtown is one of the most beautiful beaches in Denmark. Let's talk about Amager Strandpark, a long expanse of white that winds through the dunes and hidden lagoons. Be careful, though: to serve swim steel arms and a wetsuit in the cold.

THE FOOD IS YOUR CALLING
The capital's culinary reputation has taken a leap forward in 2010, when Rene Redzepi's Noma has been designated Best Restaurant in the World by the influential Restaurant Magazine. Of course, this is only one of the choices. Not bad, even the 1.th, near the waterfront, where Mette Martinussen awaits you for an unforgettable experience, halfway between the party and the live performance.

LIFE IS FREE
The free community of Christiania is loved and hated in Copenhagen. Depending on your point of view. Founded in 1971 by a group of hippies, extends to over 300,000 m2 and follows its own rules and regulations. There is also a bicycle shop, a school, jazz clubs and cafés, but especially Christiania is a mecca for artists. Over the years he has several times threatened to be dismantled for the outrageous conduct of its inhabitants. Odi et amo is the right mood for this utopia on earth.

SWEETS AND HIS GLORY
The bakeries in Copenhagen are full, but try to ask for a "Danish" and you respond with a smile, amazed. The fact is that here is called Wienerbrød, because it was introduced in the mid-nineteenth century by the Viennese pastry. the most good ones are filled with cream and covered in icing and are from La Glace (3-5 Skoubogade). Slurp!

ART KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES
Inside dell'Arken (Skovvej 1 Ishøj), the museum of reference for contemporary art in the city, piles of rubble are against the walls, and every surface is covered with spray colors. The show is awesome and hand, if one can say so, it is the German artist Katharina Grosse. Must see to believe.

HIS CHANNEL
Can not speak to Copenhagen without a tribute to his channel. Were traced between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the city's wealth depended on trade. Although large merchant ships are a thing of the past, to see the sun go down slow on these waterways is one of the best experiences in the city.

BEER, A SERIOUS
Hard to find a Dane who does not love beer. One of our favorite places to enjoy it is the micro-brewery Nørrebro Bryghus (Ryesgade 3), whose mission is "To ensure that the Danes are proud of their culture due to the beer." Success is guaranteed.

BREATHTAKING VIEWS
Built as an observatory in 1642, the Rundetaarn is one of the landmarks in the city. From here you can enjoy an incomparable view of the red roofs of Copenhagen. From the street a ramp leads up to the tower by taking a spiral. An follow it, but the best is waiting for you at the top. Where to find the Rundetaarn? Købmagergade 52A.

smørrebrød MANIA
Slices of rye bread covered with meat, smoked fish, cheese or paté: This wonderful "sandwich" is the best companion of the Danish lunches from time immemorial. For the connoisseur there are at least two references in the city: Ida Davidsen (Store Kongensgade 70) and Aamanns (Øster Farimagsgade 10). The first is an institution since 1888, the second interprets the tradition in modern shags, but without giving up a crumb, it is appropriate to say, quality.

Responsible tourism: cultural shock Vs report

Get involved. Other cultures often have different concepts from our relation to time to the personal sphere and how to behave in public. Your journey will be much less nerve-wracking, and above all, more fun, if you will let contaminate. You might even get to change your beliefs about some aspects by no means secondary.

Dress appropriately. Observe the locals: their example will help you to choose what to wear. In the countries most "conservatives" do not go around and try to be overly undressed always neat and clean: it is simply respect.

Do not waste resources such as water, food and energy - in this way does not give arrecherete the locals and be respectful of their environment.

Buy items dell'artiginato local: you will be sure that your money goes directly to the local community.

Rediscover the ancient art of haggling, a little 'game two, a little' game of chess, with a dash of theater, bargaining is a skill and an art form. It is a real social interaction and, for this reason, do not look only to the result.

Try to understand when it is appropriate to negotiate and when it is not. You might even have fun and expand your views: you pull up to the last penny really brings an advantage? Is not it better to stay for a time by the seller?

When you have done these reflections intercultural, even if at the beginning you would never suspect of having something in common with the locals, you will be caught by surprise. You will have found that people are the same wherever you go, we all have the same needs and desires, aspirations and emotions. This "revelation" can be considered the Holy Grail of the traveler.

Escape from Monday. The best car journeys

Coast of the Highlands (Scotland)
Narrow strips of asphalt fringe the beautiful west coast of Scotland. Long fjords, valleys carved by glaciers, plains surrounded by mountains, rugged wild coast, the journey along the coast of Scotland is very impressive.

Castles are an integral part of the landscape and pretty villages are perfect for a pit stop. This is also the home of whiskey - situated at the end of a day at the wheel.

The advice: use the map of the site of the National Trust of Scotland.

From Amsterdam to Istanbul

Surely you will pass Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. That means different codes and different road conditions and customs.

The advice: when you're in Istanbul rewarded with a stay at the Arena Hotel, in the historic port area of Sultanahmet; The building is a fine example of Ottoman architecture of the nineteenth century.

Amalfi Coast
From Sorrento to Salerno, the Amalfi Coast offers 50 kilometers of stunning views which will require extra attention - it will be difficult to keep your eyes on the road! This narrow strip of asphalt winds along cliffs on a clear blue sea and through the beautiful towns of Positano and Amalfi.

Driving along this coast can be a thrill, especially when the bus drivers face absently sharp bends. In summer it turns into a queue of 50 km - but at least you have plenty of time to admire the scenery.

The advice: it can happen to note extravagant sculptures called Big Things: no trip along the east coast can be defined as such without a stop at the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour.

Route 66 (United States)
Route 66 is still an exciting experience. At the edge of an old Pontiac or Chevrolet, 4000 km separating Chicago from California - via Kansas, Texas and Arizona - are a journey through time. Obviously you will need to survive a hamburger, fries, slices of cake and fizzy drinks in paper cups.

Affectionately called Main Street or Mother Road (Mother of all roads), this old lady is going to be gradually supplanted. But even if outclassed by new roads, his legend will not die.

The Board: The National Historic Route 66 Federation deals with the protection of this highway practically in disuse; according to the federation about 85% of the original road is still passable.

Vegetarians traveling between heaven & hell

Singapore: paradise
Between hectic markets and sophisticated restaurants in Singapore is no shortage of opportunities for those who said no to the meat. Not to mention that the local food plays the most of the contributions of those in Asia, from Malaysia to China with forays into the traditional nyonya, and then: refined use of lemon, coconut and tamarind. The dishes are not all vegetarians, but you will go into a trance by ordering a laksa lemak (a noodle soup with coconut and spices). Stuff to Nirvana.

India: paradise
Two words: dosa and thali, two of the best contributions of South India to the happiness of the world. The first is a kind of celebration all-you-can-eat, with capacities ranging from simple rice with lentils and curry in sumptuous banquets of an unspecified number of courses. The second is the most delicious snack that can be found around the Subcontinent: pancakes with rice and lentils flavored with onion by soaking in a tasty lentil soup ever. There is no bread for the teeth of carnivores in these parts.

San Francisco: paradise

Morocco: paradise
The colors of the spices that come together for a walk in the souq are hypnotic. Be careful, therefore, not all the dishes "vegetarians" are entirely without meat, even if the tagine cooked with fruit in the typical cone-shaped pieces are sublime. Even the harira, the national soup of Morocco, may contain meat: ask the vegetarian version with chickpeas and lentils and you will be in paradise in this part of northern Africa. If a food culture is judged by bread then ... well, the Khubz is fantastic!

Eating vegetarian (and good) in Germany seems an easy thing, but beware: even in the best restaurants in Berlin is easy for your vegetable soup cook at the last minute add a bit 'of bacon - so, for a form of passion national. On the contrary, the meat dishes are excellent: German cuisine, from this point of view, deserves more consideration of that it enjoys. The frankfurters, for example. Responsible tourism: eco-guides

Reduction of unsold inventory
We have improved our sales forecasts to ensure that, at the end of life of a particular edition, not that a few copies remain in stock. In this way, we can contain the number of volumes to be sent to pulping.

Graphic structure adequate
For travel guides Lonely Planet is used a graphic structure standard, and this allows to reduce the waste of paper for the production of "drafts".

For printing, EDT employs card format adapted to that of the guides, in order to limit the processing residues.

We use thin paper, to reduce the weight of the books and, consequently, the cost of transport. Our goal, also from the point of view of drafting, is that each page contains the maximum amount of information possible, to reduce the number of total pages.

Choosing environmentally friendly paper
In collaboration with our suppliers, we work to improve the eco-friendliness of the paper used for printing the guides EDT / Lonely Planet. As pointed out by Greenpeace we aim to ensure that:

1 virgin paper comes from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC; Council for Sustainable Forest Management). The FSC is the only certification standards in place to ensure that the wood (or a product such as paper) comes from forests conducted according to the principles of good forest management. The FSC standard is supported by major international environmental organizations: Greenpeace, WWF and Friends of the Earth (FoE), as well as wood industries, professionals, organizations of indigenous peoples and forest communities. The presence of the FSC logo on volumes indicates that, by applying to the paper mill, it is possible to trace the origin of the consignment of timber, forest until the unit from which the fiber;

2 the process of paper production while protecting the environment, without damaging the surrounding territory and populations.

From the Salone del Gusto: A Journey there is more value

Hard to think of a better opportunity for our test of the big event dedicated to the flavors of the world - the Salone del Gusto - and concomitant meeting of more than 5,000 representatives of food communities that make up the Earth Mother, the global network founded in 2004 and consists by all those who are committed to supporting food production that respects the environment and local communities.

We can not fail also to a certain air of the house due to the fact that many of our Italian guides are enriched by their contributions collected in collaboration with the project Terra Madre.

The link between travel and food is evident. Along the roads of taste are moving more and more people and do so with a level of awareness on the rise. The research of flavors, foods and food cultures has become one of the levers that lead to travel the world, next to those of art, meeting with other people, welfare or simple entertainment. For those who interpret the journey in this way, the Turin event is a dream come true. In the spaces of the Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre, in fact, meet with marvelous ease all the roads on the planet.

You can start from very near, Italy, and dedicate time to explore and taste deliciously sometime around the stand of our own. If the halls are a faithful miniature of the universe world, however, there is nothing to expand the range. After another taste of the energy supplied by the bee honey thyme black Sicily, just a few steps I decided to fly across the Atlantic and land in one of the most interesting areas of the Exhibition: that of Latin America.

Hence the temptation to pick up a Lonely Planet is irresistible with the premiere of the new edition of the guide Argentina (November 2010) under the nose, we love to smell the scents and explore the colors of the stands. The first meeting with the delegates of the Slow Food Presidium of the Andean potatoes of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, planted between 1800 and 3800 meters above sea level.

A few feet is enough to move to the Andes and come across a mysterious product whose origin is lost in the pre-Hispanic past. We talk about the root of yacón, which gives a sweet and juicy flesh pale yellow color, the texture similar to those of the pear.

Given that one of the themes of this year is the memory of the food or the importance of the transition from one generation to the other of wisdom food, Slow Food to remember that Argentina is not only remote Andean areas. Manuel Alberti in the district of Buenos Aires, for example, are implementing a project of taste education and the creation of a community garden for the children in conditions of poverty.

The profound connection between food and culture and the need to pass on this wealth is thus confirm one of the keys to understanding strongest event, as indicated by Carlo Petrini in his opening speech.

By mid-morning the issue was taken up by the Laboratory of the earth "Pleasure and well-being", in a seminar at the School of Advanced Studies on Sustainability and Food Policies which indicated prospects of dense philosophical references to the conquest (or return, so that is also ) of a harmonious relationship between food and pleasure.

In an even stronger and more concrete, however, the fact that food brings with it undisputable values has reminded the stand of Afghanistan (took only a few steps to move in Asia), with its cultivation of saffron become a powerful tool for subtract land to crops of opium.

A day of remembrance and sustainability could only end with a jump to the exhibition dedicated to Africa, the mother continent. To return to the saffron, the first color that comes to us is red, that of the pistil of this flower that collects in the community Taliouine in the Moroccan province of Taroudant.

Morocco is still the protagonist with Argan oil that is produced according to ancient wisdom in the regions of the south coast, between Safi and Goulimime. There are other delicious ideas (and wonderful inspiration for an African trip), such as those coming from mullet roe obtained from Imraguen nomadic fishermen in Mauritania, or dall'oroupounnà (powder of baobab leaves) prepared by the Dogon people in Mali.

And the old Europe? Even around his stand the taste sensations are not lacking. You can see the goodness of the sausage Mirandesa before going to Portugal or powers organoleptic garlic sarac Ljubitovica, collected by the Croatian women with age-old wisdom and still be able to keep away the witches of fasting. Impossible, a few yards away, do not get groped by a glimpse of the fabulous cheeses of Guyenne and Gascogne, we also offer one of the most contagious smiles of the day.

For orientation in all this abundance that remains is to rely on personal inclination. So, it is just for the sake of the writer if at the end of the exploration we bagged some jar Saxon Village Preserves (from Transylvania with flavor), a bottle of oil from Ragusa, a slice of goat cheese aged in caves of Jämtland (wisdom Swedish, fortunately, is not confined to assemble furniture), and a sweet and memorable Bosnian plum compote.

Get right on the road, at this point, is the best way to enrich the experiences buds. For the next appointment with the Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre, however, have to wait until 2012.

Responsible Tourism: Volunteering in travel

This is an opportunity that expresses the highest level of philosophy of responsible tourism, because it is not addressed only to the protection of the environment and of the territories visited, but aims to bring practical help, active, to populations in need.

The questions that you ask yourselves are similar to those at the beginning of each trip: where to go, what to do, how to find contacts for organizing experience, how to overcome language barriers. Not demoralizzatevi, you will find the answer for all.

1 TWO GREAT ALTERNATIVE
First, keep in mind that there are two major alternatives. You can turn to an association that takes care of travel arrangements and the period of voluntary work abroad. Or, you can contact one of the many NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) engaged in humanitarian projects in developing countries. The Italian NGO landscape is quite large and varied. A good starting point is to explore the site Nonprofit Italy.

Keep in mind that, in general, join a volunteer program at an NGO can be more challenging than relying on an association that deals with organizing all phases of the work period - these institutions in the UK are called "Gap year Organisations "and they are quite common. (A good review on the site The Year Out Group). In the first case we require a commitment comparable to that of all full-time workers engaged in the project, the second one takes into account the nature of "educational" and "temporary" of the service provided.

2 ORGANIZED VOLUNTEER
Usually, a "Gap year organization" will offer you a package that includes the logistical and organizational aspects of the stay of voluntary work (but not the cost of transportation and visa). The advantage is that, by paying the registration fee, you will save time on research and you will not have the feeling to go into the unknown. This type of service is targeted very often to an audience between the ages of 18 and 30 years. In Italy, two things to keep in mind are WEP, based in Turin and Milan, and Intermediate, with headquarters in Rome.

3 THE CHOICE OF AN NGO
If you are willing to put you completely in the game and live to the full the experience of voluntary work, we recommend contacting an NGO engaged in humanitarian projects in developing countries. Fortunately, thanks to the contribution of religious organizations such as Caritas or the Institute Cottolengo, the possibilities abound. A great starting point for your research is the page field of humanitarian work and volunteering in the City of Turin, although any good surfer will have no difficulty to find the information and the most suited to their needs.

4 WHERE AND WHAT TO DO
> Humanitarian Intervention "lifesaver"
One of the symbols of volunteering is probably Africa, this fascinating continent that has not yet managed to win the long struggle against hunger, thirst, disease and war. The choice to work as volunteers in this area is challenging and requires a deep motivation. You will be involved in the reception centers for AIDS patients or children in difficulties, or in projects of nutritional support. Among the lay associations to turn to, mention Africa called, a non-profit organization that has projects in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda. The protection of the health and status of women is at the center of efforts being made on the religious front, the Italian Caritas. Is also very active in the Community of Sant'Egidio, born in Rome in 1968 from the Roman base, his projects have been extended over the years to all over the world, and today the community is active in many countries in Asia and Africa, such as Indonesia and Burkina Faso.

> Support for local economies
Many travelers choose to spend a period abroad and to offer support to the development of local realities. Even in this case, fortunately, opportunities abound. The Lonely Planet, when possible, provide practical guidance on this form of volunteering, in the paragraph "Work" of the "Information" section. Some examples.

In Costa Rica by the international organization Habitat for Humanity, which manages projects for the construction of buildings intended for residential buildings in the country. In order to participate you pour a portion (about 100 US $) and then contributes to their accommodation and meals with other US $ 15 per day. Further south, in Ecuador, a non-profit organization FEVI employs volunteers with children, the elderly, women's groups and indigenous communities, and is a good choice for those interested in living the experience of a cultural exchange.

5 RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET
Choose your destination. Then read more about the sites you mention.

Italian sites
»Unimondo, dedicated to human rights and sustainable development.
»Village Volint: the portal VIS - International Volunteer Service for Development.
"The Volunteer Online: OIKOS by the association, information about work camps and voluntary world-wide.

International Sites
"VolunteerMatch: portal dedicated to volunteering, even to know each other and exchange information.
»Africa Trust Networks, one of the most qualified organizations for volunteering in North and West Africa.
»AidCamps International: India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Cameroon among the countries in which it operates.
"Casa Guatemala to help the children of the country and lend a helping hand to rural communities.

Across the Pacific, in Australia, the Australian Volunteers International places volunteers in Aboriginal communities. In some cases you do not need a specific preparation, because it is helping out in roadhouse run by the community.

The charm of India is also strong on people willing to engage in voluntary activities. The initiatives conducted throughout the country by international associations are numerous. In Andhra Pradesh by the Confederation of Voluntary Associations, an Indian NGO that you will use in projects of sustainable agriculture and to support young people in local communities.

6.-ECO VOLUNTEERING
Protecting the environment is not an abstract principle, but is closely related to the lives of local people. Costa Rica, which boasts a unique natural heritage, offers programs of voluntary work for 30 days in the national parks. Li manages the Asociación de Voluntarios para el Servicio en las Areas Protegidas. Contribute to the costs of the food with the payment of US $ 14 per day and you have to give your availability for at least 15 days.

Africa: The Best along the Mediterranean

Start from Cairo, in the shadow of the Sphinx, and enjoy a binge of mysterious pyramids and then to head along the coast to Alexandria. Although it was founded by Alexander the Great in the past and would host the Lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the world, today this city is characterized mainly by the period under French domination, which were colonial buildings and elegant cafes. After trying some of the beaches between Alexandria and Shallum, enters in Libya.

Travelling in Libya is an interesting experience but also full of frustration, because the law requires to be accompanied by an official agency and because entry into the country may be subject to unexpected restrictions. Further west at the time of Shahat, you'll see the most beautiful stretches of coast of Libya; Do not miss Ras al-Hilal. Near Shahat are the greek-roman ruins of Cyrene, where you can watch Zeus from near and walk on mosaics that, if they were in Europe, would be covered by glass. Do not miss Leptis Magna, the best-preserved Roman cities in Africa, and go to breathe the air of the Arab and North African Tripoli.

Entering in Tunisia, you leave behind the restrictions imposed by Libya to independent travel. After taking a little 'sun on the beaches of Jerba, visit the Roman Amphitheatre in El-Jem, with its shades of honey, thinking of the fate of those who came out alive. Continue north to Tunis, where you can immerse yourself in the labyrinth of the medina and calmly sip a coffee or mint tea, knowing that getting lost is fun, and that sooner or later he finds himself on the street. To the north-east of Tunis, there are the remains of Roman and Punic city of Carthage. To the east of Carthage, Cap Bon, stretch white sand beaches that are among the most beautiful in Tunisia. Prior to joining Algeria, explore the Roman city of Bulla Regia, well preserved and famous for its villas groundwater.

Sandwiched between the Mediterranean and the Atlas Mountains Telliano, the beautiful coast of Algeria is little visited by tourists and boasts the presence of Roman ruins and the bustling capital, Algiers. From here, take a ferry to France or meander in the Sahara. Unless you do not choose the plane, Morocco is out of the question because the border is still closed.

Cinema: when the destination is worth the ticket

TOKYO (JAPAN)
If you have been to Tokyo, you will have no trouble recognizing the representation of that megalopolis gives Sophia Coppola in his Lost in Translation (2003): Tokyo surprising yet trivial, futuristic yet archaic, mysterious and obvious at the same time.

The truth is that Tokyo is always ready to spiazzarti and distort your point of view. Takes you, capture and then leaves you with a hint of mystery and "unspoken". The same feeling that many viewers have experienced at the end of the film and is also found, at least in part, at the end of every self-respecting travel.
Destination: Tokyo

PARIS (FRANCE)
Party in the USA, it is likely that Paris has hosted more movie set than any other city in the world (but it would be interesting to make a comparison with Rome). The City of Light is one of the protagonists of the revolutionary À Bout de Souffle (Jean-Luc Godard, 1960); love triangle with tragic aspect of Jules et Jim (François Truffaut, 1962); the futuristic thriller Alphaville (Godard still, 1965); and the romantic (or silly) The fabulous world of Amélie (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001).

All these jumps from one genre to another are more than understandable: there are so many things to see and do in Paris, and the city is so rich and varied that everyone can imagine what he wants.
Destination: Paris

MANHATTAN (UNITED STATES)
Woody Allen is perhaps the most famous among those who helped to create the myth of Manhattan. He resumed its streets and its people in numerous films, such as Annie Hall (1977), Manhattan (1979) and Hannah and Her Sisters (1986).

There are dozens of routes that you can follow to regain Manhattan Woody: The Beekman Theatre; John's Pizzeria; the Elaine's restaurant; the 59th St Bridge. The eye of the great director has gone in almost every direction - follow him in real life can be just as exciting as the movies.
Destination: New York City

OUTBACK (AUSTRALIA)
Think Mad Max - The Road Warrior (George Miller, 1981), the second film in the trilogy of Mad Max with a big Mel Gibson and what comes to mind? Desert expanses of sight, from the wind modeling rocks; In short, an apocalyptic scenario. None of this is due to special effects.

It is, in fact, of what you'll find when you venture from the remote parts of Broken Hill in New South Wales: here was shot much of the film. This is the real Australian outback: where men are men and the sheep run and hide.
Location: New South Wales

DUBLIN (IRELAND)
Entirely shot in the north of Dublin, The Commitments (Alan Parker, 1991) tells of a group of young people who throw themselves penniless in the creation of a soul band and that among rivalries and jealousies, end the inevitable (and sad) brawl.

The dark atmosphere and hard in the film are part of the soul of Dublin, as is the romantic flavor that accompanies the memories of those who have visited the city. Parker's film does not betray this: going around the suburbs, the camera captures a piece of the Irish dream, made of healthy optimism and illusions miss.

HUNTING FOR EUROPE MUSIC FESTIVAL
Europe must be listened to. This is the motto of the travelers who visit in the summer the old continent in the name of sunbathing and music. The oldest event is to Glastonbury in the United Kingdom, which hosts rock concerts since 1971, as well as theater and circus. Another must-see is the Roskilde (Denmark), a hard rock festival. If you're in popular music then the Baltika is the one that's right for you: this annual international folk festival is held alternately in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. United States: the best of travel on the road

HIGHWAY 61, THE GREAT ROAD ALONG THE RIVER
The Mississippi River is not only a geographical divide and a psychological boundary between east and west. It is also the cradle of American music: blues, jazz and rock and roll. The legendary Highway 61 starts from Minneapolis, and then goes from St Louis to Memphis, whose identity will always be linked to Elvis Presley.

From here continue to the Mississippi Delta, home of the blues, and reached New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. The 1930 km of this stretch of the river tell the whole story, legendary and revolutionary of American music. Make a detour of 650 km and reach Nashville, the capital of the country.

PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY, CALIFORNIA
The coastal road and quintessential California dream. The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH, also known as Highway 1) embraces the west coast of the United States from the Mexican border to the ends of the state of Washington, and never strays far from the water.

Parts from San Diego and the tip of your nose cabrio due north to the Golden State. Enjoy the beauty of California and the extraordinary ocean views at every turn. Go ahead and be prepared to see elephant seals, discover secret beaches and touch the tallest trees on the planet. Apart from the most obvious destinations (Los Angeles and San Francisco), make a stop in Laguna Beach, Hearst Castle, Big Sur, Monterey and Mendocino.

ROUTE 66
The road trip across the United States by definition is one that follows the legendary 'Main Street of America': more than 3200 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, through the Midwest, the Great Plains and the Southwest. Built in 1926, it was the street of dreams that led to the Promised Land (California), in pure style Steinbeck. Although officially the US-66 does not exist anymore, you can still follow his tracks. It will be a sort of nostalgic safari in the heart and soul of the United States - and motel vintage retro atmosphere of the 50s. The soundtrack of this trip is obvious, but which one will you choose? Nat King Cole, The Rolling Stones, Depeche Mode ...?

MOHAWK TRAIL MASSACHUSETTS
Travel to New England in the name of the show of autumn leaves on the trees changing color is a real fashion. In September and October in particular, there is plenty of choice on the streets that offer an extraordinary palette of brilliant shades of red, gold and orange.

Along the Mohawk Trail (MA 2), a 100 km road that runs through the towns of the Berkshires (western Massachusetts), you'll encounter a cocktail of tourist traps, prestigious museums, fine dining and breathtaking scenery. The road leading to Mt Greylock is long and steep, but the view that you will enjoy the effort will pay off. From the Western Summit Overlook (east of North Adams) you can admire breathtaking views.

ALCAN FROM CANADA ALL 'ALASKA
It is the journey on the road to a dream for any lover of adventures in Alaska to get to the car. It's true: most of the Alaskan Highway (the Alcan) runs through the wilds of Canada, but it is a legendary street and of breathtaking beauty, then there is.

It starts from the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, Dawson's Creek, British Columbia, after which the striking Alcan meanders through the pristine peaks of this province, the fabulous and endless stretches of the Yukon Territory and the wild heart of Alaska. Point of arrival, after 2250 km, is the Delta Junction, near Fairbanks. Many run through the Alcan aboard a camper. Think about it, too.

Travel low cost, but without suffering

If so, maybe a little sin 'of avarice. But do not worry, at least once in our lives we all have done something ridiculous just to save a little. And then the points of view change when you travel. The little money at home would you be willing to spend again for a coffee or a treat, suddenly turn into a capital if they have to shell out on the road. "You can not, for sure the locals do not pay so much," you complain. Already, in many countries people earn just 400 $ a year, and probably do not eat at the restaurant.

The truth is that the "budget travel" does not mean giving up bread to put in their mouths, sleep at the bus station or improvise bongo players on the street corner to scrape together some change. We want to say, budget conscious, but as long as the excess of prudence does not stop you from enjoying the trip.

Here are some tips for traveling to saving without too many sacrifices.

It all starts from the water

Of course, it depends on where you are, but remember that nobody forces you to invest a fortune in buying mineral water in the countries where you can safely drink ... the love that flows from the tap.

Do not be an ascetic at the table of the gods

My facial tics get worse when I find out that there are still people who visit destinations paradise for gourmets and is content to eat fruits and kebabs. If you do not allow at least one room with all the trappings in France, Japan or Argentina (to quote the illustrious examples) you will have lost a good part of the pleasure of the journey. Another tip: Remember that a dinner as it should is often more expensive than a dining level. So, invest your budget also according to the time slot.

Avoid the most expensive cities

A Venice or Salzburg you will need to sleep at least one night in the city center to enjoy the atmosphere, but you will save a lot 'if the other days of your stay you will be content with a peripheral arrangement. At that point, to be a true budget travel, you will need to consider the cost of the transfer, to see if the game is worth the candle really.

Traveling as a couple

There are some advantages (and some disadvantages) to make long trips with friends. Often the double rooms are slightly more expensive than the individual, and often have the same price. And then you have someone who makes you company ...

Avoid the fees

Change cash or traveler's checks is often the fastest way to drive up the costs. A credit card or an ATM will be the best allies to have a favorable exchange rate. Be careful, though, because the rule is not universal. Find a bank that applies reasonable rates of the transaction at the ATM or request a credit card for which there are no fees on foreign transactions.

Defense of the travel guide

In recent years, so has established a culture contrary to the tour guides. I think those who prefer to gather information online and often unverified. Remember that nothing is more annoying than ending up in the tourist traps for which a good guide warns. Or, worse, run run into the dangers and annoyances that usually a good author narrates and guides described in the "Dangers & Annoyances". Personally, I will continue to use the guide, even when the web traffic for mobile phones will become free!

Travelling yesterday and today. What has changed?

Travelling yesterday and today. What has changed?

One of the biggest changes concerning travel was the loss of innocence. Remember the days when if you were a cute baby you could look out into the cockpit of a jet without being mistaken for a terrorist in the grass? Or when you could get on board with one and a half liters of your favorite beverage without having to distribute the liquids in containers so small as boring? Or, finally, when the security men were not ready to search you in the most unexpected moments?

What we have lost in terms of innocence, however, we have gained in convenience and information: online booking very easy and detailed reviews to the springs of the bed or pillow type. The next time you set out to search Google for advice on the best hotels or posada, fun to take a step back with the memories. The ideas below may help you.

DECIDING WHERE TO GO
Yesterday:'d leafed through catalogs and brochures in a travel agency or trawled through the pages of a guide in the library. Or, you would have been inspired by the photographs of a friend.

Today: immediate access to blogs, video and social networks has broadened your horizons. You can read something about the favorite food truck in Portland and, almost without noticing it, find yourself driving on the roads of the Pacific Northwest.

HOW TO GET TO DESTINATION
Yesterday: less frequent flights, airlines, and less importantly, less low cost. Travelling was a matter not at all instinctive, required greater planning, more patience and more time. And you were often forced to go (sorry) in a travel agency.

Today: sail in search of the best offer, please enter the details of your credit card ... you're already gone. You can check in online, print your ticket: the travel agency you!

CHOOSE AND BOOK A HOTEL
Yesterday: catalogs, guides, word of mouth and then the inevitable phone call booking.

Today: unleash your online information tools, from search engines to web reviews of other travelers. And then you book, always online.

MI AS COSTS?
Yesterday we asked Bob, one of our readers and long-time backpacker. And we said: "Often young travelers tell me that they think my time was spent less. I answer that I would have spent $ 400 at the time for a boat trip one-way to the UK today have become 50 , for a week of travel! And so they understand how convenient it is to travel today. "

Today: thought once inconceivable to move between London and Belgium spending a little more than the price of a movie ticket is reality.

HOW TO STAY IN TOUCH
Yesterday: you wrote letters, postcards and sometimes you spedivi lanciavi in a telephone call. If your friends were traveling, you were not ready to hear for a long time, for the simple fact that they were away! And you were certain that you would have them reviewed before that person on You Tube.

Today: e-mail, Skype, Twitter, Facebook. The volume of fire information is impressive. Finding a nice card, instead, became the real business.

WHAT HAPPENS ON SITE?
Yesterday Tourist Offices were the main reference. Today, unfortunately, some have closed because people are looking for information on the web. With Googlemaps and the GPS, then, it has become (almost) superfluous even ask for directions.

Today: want to know where to eat vegan in Ulaanbaatar? Quiet, someone will have a blog on this!
